In which Blake reviews CWA from 11/16…

My review from www.rikkiregal.com

At the Grace Park Rec Center, Statesville NC.

The wrestlers and fans in attendance witnessed history tonight. “Ricky Landell and I will never team again” came through the p.a. system. These words were uttered by Steve Corino, former NWA, ECW, and AWA World’s Heavyweight Champion. The thirteen year veteran announced earlier this year that he was retiring at the end of 2007. With CW Anderson retiring weeks ago, the “Extreme Horsemen” faced an uncertain future. Tonight though, the “Horsemen” went out in style against Team Macktion in the main event.

Quick results from the card: (Referees: Katie Kincaid, Red Jones)

1. Mr Wrestling 3 defeated Caleb Konley via pinfall with a german suplex. This was Mr Wrestling 3’s debut in the main-land United States, he came to the ring wearing his half of the tag team belts from AWA’s Hawaii promotion HCW. MW3 won this with Mr Wrestling 2 on October 13 in Wahiawa, Hawaii. Impressive showing from MW3.

2. Allison Danger rolled up Daffney by her tights for a small package win. One of the better ladies matches I have seen on the indy circuit. Special referee was ROHs Becky Bayless.

3. The Elite Icons (Jake Manning & Joey Silvia) with manager Ty Dillinger beat Derek Ryze and Ares. The Icons and Dillinger are truly hated in CWA. Ryze teamed quite well with Ares, and the crowd put a lot of support in them, even though just a month ago they were hissing for Ryze’s demise at the hands of Stoney Hooker.

4. “El Fuego” Jesse Ortega won by disqualification against CWA Champion Charlie Dreamer. Ortega was accompanied to the ring by his CWF tag team champion partner, Gemini Kid. The disqualification came about as Gemini slid a pair of handcuffs into the ring for Ortega. Gemini began to distract the ref, Dreamer got the cuffs and was caught by the quickly twirled ref (by Gemini) and DQ’d. Allison Danger came to ringside to side with Ortega and Gemini. This started an attack on Dreamer that ended with the Statesville Police dragging Ortega out of the building in handcuffs.

5. Team Macktion (Kirby & TJ Mack) won with the “Death From Above” against the Extreme Horsemen (Steve Corino & Ricky Landell). Great match. Began with respect shown on both sides, but that ended when Corino took a cheap shot on Kirby. Buy the DVD when this comes out to see this. At the end, Kirby got on the p.a. and thanked Steve for his time in wrestling, his training assistance and for putting on great shows for the fans. Corino in true gentleman fashion thanked the fans and praised CWA for given real wrestling to them. The backstage emptied as Corino gave his curtain call.

Not only was this the last time the Horsemen teamed up, but this also marks Corino’s last apperance in North Carolina. Later today, Corino will make his final appearance in South Carolina – in York at the York Rec Center.
