SCAC needs a HHH, PRN – DNR

Is interested in my take on what happened last night at Ground Zero?

I arrived at Ground Zero at 7.30pm.  Before entering the building, I was informed that the inspector from the Athletic Commission was already inside laying down the law.

Ground Zero is a great little club – it’s nice and dark inside, plenty of random seating and big horse statue.  Hot as hell, but what isn’t right now?  Spoke to a few of the familiars, a few of which were already taking advantage of the bar in the basement.  The ring was just getting finished being set up.

HVW’s new announcer, Brett Wolverton said that he had been grounded and had to apply for a license on the spot.  Everyone was comparing notes on who had a license and who didn’t.  Eight o’clock came and went, and there was still speculation in the air about whether we would be having a show or not.

I suppose we got started about nine o’clock or so.  There were two matches, the first Bryan Austin against Bryce Bryant, then the T Dawg HG vs. Neil Nitro match.  ER came to ringside to do the special introduction for HG.  About 5 minutes into it, the inspector walks up behind him and asks him for his license and gives him the “cut it” sign (the hand across the throat).  ER gallantly keeps reading, and receives another cut it.  It lasted one more, until the inspector reaches for the microphone.  ER swings high and smashes the mic into the inspector….of course, that’s a joke – ER relents and hands it to HG.

The people who are familiar with HG and what he says can imagine what came out next.  The inspector apparently took much offense to what was being said, because he walked out on his mobile phone.  After the match, which saw HG spraying Neil in the face to win, I walked up to the dressing area where the inspector was telling them that the show was being shut down.  There was of course much protest, with little effect.

This was close to 10pm.  The show was going to be wrestling matches, band, wrestling, band.  A few folks left, and I decided that it was getting late; I needed to head home to be at work on time this morning.

When I walked out, the Spartanburg County Sheriffs Office was pulling up.  In the end, there were six county cars and about eight deputies at the club.  Mick and Viper were trying to explain to the officers about the situation.  The inspector told them he was just doing his job.

I listened for a little while and then bid everyone farewell.  I did go over to the inspector and told him that I didn’t envy his job a bit.

I am not the biggest fan of the Athletic Commission, and I have never really heard anything good about them.  I’m sure the men and women who work for them are good people and are just trying to do their jobs.  From my experience though, they only seem to be used by promoters to get one over on another promoter.  The fact is though, if you are going to run in South Carolina, you need to have all of your “ducks in a row”.  That means a promoters license, an event permit, and all of your talent property licensed.

In the future I do want to try and run some shows, perhaps even my own promotion.  As long as the commission is in operation, I see no reason to run in South Carolina.

In my opinion calling the commission in or ratting out another promoter just hurts the entire sport in South Carolina.  Bringing in an inspector sends ripples through everybody who is running.  To be truly fair, wouldn’t an inspector coming into an area have to check everybody who is running a show?

It doesn’t really effect me, but that’s my opinion.

Busy busy busy…..Thursday, Adam and I decided to pay a visit to one of our longtime favorites – “The Technician” Neil Nitro.  Neil has two of the best looking dogs I have seen.  Big old rolly polly bulldogs – Cooper and Li’l Bit.  Cooper is built like a little tank.  Look at this dawg:

Neil, you got a great pair of canines…and a very neat house, I had to clean when I got home.

Friday, ER and I set off to Statesville, NC for CWA’s “Clash of Champions” in the air conditioned Bentley Center.  I took Hwy 64 to I40, which I realized is a lot quicker than going down to Spartanburg and taking I85 to I77.  We came through Lenoir, NC – home of the “Goonies”.

We arrived in Statesville at 3.30, thirty minutes before our scheduled meeting at 4pm with DickBourne, Mid Atlantic Gateway Master.  So I looked around for something to do for half an hour – we found a big Goodwill store just up the road.  ER immediately balked at the idea, as his tastes in shopping do not include stores “like that” (Oddly, he does enjoy The Lions Den though).   I convinced him – and as soon as we walked in he found two WWF videos for $2 each.  Then we found a rolling luggage bag for $6 – with three unopened rain ponchos inside.

We saw a woman wearing open toed sandals.  Whoa, how to describe these little piggies!  It was as if someone squeezed all of the toes together and they stuck.  The middle toe was aimed outward under its neighbor, etc.  Just some messed up digits.

Then we found a giant catfish pillow!

We met DickBourne back down at the Chick-Fil-A and dined on chicki sammiches.

We headed over to the Bentley Center to get ready for the show.  Very nice set up there – the office that we used was nice and cool as well as the wrestlers dressing room.  The only drawback was the a/c in the main part burned out so it was muggy during the show.  Good to see Jake Manning, Bobby Houston, Tyshion, Mike Cline, Bobby Eaton, Brad Thomas, Brad Stutts, etc etc.

I always have a good time at these shows, whether they are CWA or EWA - I like the mix of old school and the newer guys.

I have to go ahead and apologize to the wrestlers at the show, I spent most of the time in the “media room” getting ready for the video stuff that DickBourne is doing for Superstar and George.  I did hear some great stuff from Bill Eadie – great guy.

TNA’s Traci Brooks was there and did the ring announcements up to the main event, where ER took over for the main event.  I told him a few times that night, but his announcement gave me goosebumps – I know that sounds strange, but just the way he did made this little rec center in Statesville with a match in front of a 100+ people sound like MSG with thousands of fans.  ER is the Announcer!  (And in the words of Thomas Simpson in his last blog -) BOOK HIM!

Mr. Inertia was there and living up to his name!

About forgot, Ralph Harkey’s wife was involved in a car wreck before the show preventing him from being able to attend, so positive vibes to Mrs Harkey.

The show was over before 10.30 and we hit the road.  Had a brief stop at Ruby’s Tuesday for some mouse salad and a cold drinky winky (Lemon Drop Martini).

Saturday, Adam, Melony and I hit APW to show off Mel’s belly.  Great to see the guys.  Adam and I provided some commentary at the announce table.  The old Ostgard returned after his tag match with Kameron Kade against the Beach Blondes.  He quickly turned on his partner and strutted around the ring barrier.  I may be back at APW next Saturday, not sure yet.

I think this is probably long enough.

Friday, I may be taking the night off to enjoy the nightlife…somewhere…

Total fluid expelled – 2 1/2 gallons

Friday – Met Anarchy superstars ER and Jeff Lewis and headed to Mooresboro for SWA. The Mooresboro gym is located right off Hwy 74 and it was last maintained in 1963. The smell brought back memories of gym class, all of these things smell the same. Good to see James Drake at the show – his recovery seems to be coming along well. We got to see pics of the wreck – looked gruesome. It’s good to see that his injury has not dampened his sense of humor.  Neil and Brice won the SWA tag belts that night. Had a good time – very hot though. Sweated only a half gallon as I was sitting the entire time.

Left Mooresboro and went to Chili’s in Forest City. I think Jeff and ER were trying to sweet talk their way out of paying for the food and drink. I simply played it cool – got a phone number out of it too! There is a joke there, but I’m not going to explain it.

We serenaded Kirby on the way home at 12.30 or 1am with “Living on a Prayer” – we must be “addicted”.

Saturday – ER and I headed to Marion, NC for the United Wrestling Association show. I have to say that Tom Williams and Big Daddy Z run a very good show – very professional set up with their locker room. I had to fight Marsha at ringside for photos (kidding of course). Very long show – about 4 hours – but I did enjoy seeing some new faces and some that I had not seen in a while. Very hot! Sweated out about a gallon and a half.

Hit I40 towards Asheville, ER was wanting something cold to drink. We trucked up Black Mountain and pulled into a gas station where we discovered smoke roiling out of the back of my buggy. It’s cause? We don’t know. No worries – back onto 40. We tried to make contact with the “Lenoir boys” but they totally high-hatted us. We ran through Taco Bell and loaded up.

We decided to stop at the Denny’s in Hendersonville to see if anyone was still there and were pleasantly surprised to find a rather large group congregated. – Mr Terrific, Miss Arlene, Brett, DJ Ray, Devin, Crisifix, etc etc – plus two really annoying fans (kidding again).

Sunday – Up at 9-ish? We slogged down to “The Hotel formerly known as the Fairfield Inn” in Spartanburg to pick up Kirby. Picked up the Magnums off Hwy 9 and then met Thomas in Lockhart.

Honest Doug runs a tight show. It was like “old home week” at the show. I’m not going to elaborate, but there were participants at this show that some would say would never share a building together. Did anything happen? Nope, it was Doug’s show and respect was shown to him.

I sweated a little bit, but thankfully it was a air conditioned building. I think I nearly passed out at one point during the show. I started seeing images in the periphery of my vision, I went out to get some air and sit down. My not having eaten didn’t help and I possibly may have just been “sweated out”. Thanks to everyone who checked on me.

Meal at Pizza Hut after the show and then home – tired, moist and with about 400 pictures from the weekend.

Coming up Friday, ER and I head to Statesville, NC for the Carolina Wrestling Association show. Really looking forward to the show.
